What is Bainter Sunflower Oil all about?

Bainter Sunflower Oil, LLC, located in Hoxie, KS, has made a name for itself as a supplier of pure “all natural” sunflower cooking oil. Owner, Wes Bainter, says “Our goal is to provide a 100% pure, natural oil, that will be affordable, appealing, and that may have significant health benefits for the average consumer”, and he’s done just that.

Research and development for his latest passion, Bainter Sunflower Oil, LLC, begain during the winter of 2007. The first phase included designing and building a screw-press extraction and filtration system, and a facility to store and crush the seeds.

Kansas State University Food Science Department was a great help in testing and verifying the quality, flash point and shelf life of the sunflower oil.

Bainter designed the filtering equipment himself, and it, along with the bottling plant, is housed at the companies headquarters in Hoxie. The seed crushing facility is located at a seperate site, west of town.

Bainter Sunflower Oil fills a need for most consumers. The closest competitor, olive oil, has been the choice of health-concious people for many years. But new evidence is emerging about the health benefits of sunflower oil. A new study conducted at Penn State suggests that individuals experienced a significant total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol lowering on the sunflower oil diet, compared to the average American diet, but did not experience significant cholesterol lowering on the olive oil diet. “We feel that we’re right on track with this product – it’s not only appealing, but affordable as well”, Wes says.

In the planning stages, we knew that we could produce a heart-healthy, quality sunflower oil that would adapt itself well to any application in the kitchen. After having Bainter Sunflower Oil on the shelves of grocery stores, health food stores, restaurants and deli’s over Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado as a test market, the feedback was extremely positive. “People love our oil, it’s that plain and simple”, Wes says.

“What’s really fun about this, Wes Bainter concludes, “is that we grow the sunflowers here, we process the seeds, we filter the oil, and we bottle it here. We strive to make a difference by creating a superior product, and also in the private sector, by purchasing our seeds from local farmers, improving lives through solid employment opportunities, and creating economic growth in Kansas”.
